Sunday, 30 July 1944, saw an article appear in the Sunday Post newspaper which included reports that Rommel had been wounded whilst another spoke of him having been killed. This was two weeks after he had actually been wounded when his staff car had been strafed by Allied air craft in the Normandy area of German occupied France. That incident also prevented a British assassination attempt on Rommel, as part of Operation Gaff.
Although nothing to do with an assassination attempt on Rommelâs life, it highlights the importance he played not just the minds of the Allies, but the Germans as well. There was no other German during the course of the Second World War, other than Adolf Hitler, who drew so much attention over concerns as to whether they had been killed or not.
Rommel Reported Killed
Two reports were received last night, one that Rommel had been wounded, the other that he is dead. A German captain captured by the Americans said Rommel has been wounded, cabled a Reuter correspondent from Normandy last night.
The car removing Rommel from the front overturned and left him unconscious by the side of the road for six hours. A later cable reports Rommel was wounded on July 17. Another German prisoner reported that Rommel is still in a serious condition.
A French woman in the Red Cross dealing with war prisoners was with the Germans two days ago. She declared German officers and men told her Rommel was wounded in the bombing near Falaise on the British front. He died later in hospital at Bernay.
The woman said officers and men stationed in this town had spoken of Rommelâs death as an accepted fact.
This report lacks confirmation from any authoritative Allied sources.
